Congrats to Arjun, Garri, Muaeen, and Alex for their latest work on supercharging evolution, just out in Cell! Our OrthoRep system is now continuously and stably evolving user-selected genes at mutation rates 100,000-fold higher than the cells normally use, crossing a speed limit that host genomes can’t theoretically exceed. We show how evolution with OrthoRep can be used to uncover interesting features of drug resistance in a malarial drug target. Rapid, scalable evolution of protein therapeutics and valuable metabolic enzymes are successfully underway in the lab.
